Packing Your Labour Bag: The Essentials

Going into labour can be enormously stressful. That’s why it’s a great idea to pack your maternity bag at least two weeks before your due date so you’re all ready to head out the door when the labour pain kicks in.

If it’s your first time going into labour, don’t worry because below we’ve listed the essential items that you’ll need to pack when it’s time to go to the hospital.

Birth Plan and Medical Notes

Taking a copy of your birth plan and medical notes with you when you go into labour is crucial as they provide your healthcare provider with all the information about your pregnancy. They also let your medical team know your preferences about how to manage your labour pain so don’t leave these at home!

Maternity Clothes

When you’re going into labour, wearing loose comfortable clothing is essential. Choose clothes that will not restrict you from moving around. A dressing gown is ideal for when you’re walking up and down the halls or need to use the restroom. Remember to take a few pairs of underwear and a spare set of clothes just in case you need to change while you’re there. You’ll also need a loose fitting outfit to wear for when you’re ready to come home with the baby.

Supportive Bras and Slippers

Make sure you pack two or three comfortable supportive bras as your breasts will need that extra support. Remember to include a nursing bra if you are going to be breastfeeding your baby. Toiletries

Don’t forget to pack the basics such as your toothbrush, hairbrush and towel. You’ll also be needing maternity pads as you’ll still experience some bleeding after birth. You might also want to take a hairband with you to keep your hair tied back while you’re giving birth as the last thing you want is hair getting in your face!

Snacks and Drinks

Taking healthy snacks and drinks with you to the hospital is very important as you’ll need them to keep your energy levels up. Also, make sure you take a water bottle with you to keep hydrated. Taking a ‘sports bottle’ type lid with you is also a good idea as it’ll allow you take small sips of water while you’re lying down.

Baby Clothes and Toiletries

You’ll need to pack a few sets of baby clothes and a baby shawl to keep your little one nice and snug. A baby hat to keep your baby’s head warm and some scratch mitts. Don’t forget to pack your baby some socks to keep its feet warm. You’ll also need all the basic baby toiletries such as nappies and baby wipes. If you’re going to be bottle feeding, don’t forget the bottle.

Supportive Pillows

It’s no secret that going into labour can be very uncomfortable. That’s why it’s paramount to pack a pillow to ensure you’re feeling as relaxed and comfortable as possible.
